SPU will have the remainder of the semester online.

As novel coronavirus continues to make its way through the country, the university decided it’s best to keep the remainder of its spring term online.

Saint Peter’s University President Eugene Cornacchia announced Monday evening in an email to the community that classes will “extend its online instruction through the end of the spring terms.” SPU will remain open virtually.

Residence halls will also be closing as part of the decision. Students should move out of their rooms by next Tuesday, March 24, at noon. Those who are unable to return home will be accomodated, Cornacchia said in the email.

Beginning on Wednesday, employees will work remotely until further notice. According to Cornacchia, any employee who has questions should contact the Office of Human Resources.

The email stated that students can virtually reach out to support services such as Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Center for Career Engagement and Experiential Learning (CEEL), the Center for Academic Success and Engagement (CASE) and Campus Ministry.

The library also said it was closing Monday night until further notice.

Cornacchia expressed uncertainty of when face-to-face classes will resume, but he shared his gratitude towards the Saint Peter’s community who have “demonstrated great flexibility” during this time.

Moving forward the university will continue to make decisions “in the best interest of the community.”

In New Jersey, there’s been 178 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday. The respiratory syndrome has infected 19 people in Hudson County.

SPU said on March 11 classes were to be moved online on Monday in an effort to contain the outbreak. The men’s basketball team’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament play was also cancelled due to public health and safety concerns.

For updated information, students may refer to the Office of Health Services.

Community members can relay their concerns or comments to the Student Government Association, who will be reaching out to the administration, through @spu_sga on Instagram or studentgovernment@saintpeters.edu.
